GDP Much Stronger Than Expected in First Quarter
The US economy has a tendency to lag in the 1Q following big holiday spending, but not this year. While there have been widespread predictions that the economy was slowing down and the recovery might be ending, the latest GDP report put all that to rest.
What’s Your Why?
What keeps your wheels spinning, generating new ideas and creating new solutions? What drives you forward? What is your “why?”
The Big Four Economic Indicators: Real Personal Income in March
Personal Income (excluding Transfer Receipts) in March was unchanged from February and is up 3.3% year-over-year. However, when adjusted for inflation using the BEA's PCE Price Index, Real Personal Income (excluding Transfer Receipts) MoM was at -0.20%. The real number is up 1.8% year-over-year.
First Quarter 2019
Q1 2019 proved to be the exact opposite of Q4 2018; it was the quarter where nearly everything worked. Virtually all asset classes produced positive returns, from U.S. and International equities of all sizes and sectors, to higher quality bonds and junk bonds, and, yes, even commodities floated with the rising tide.
Are All Advisors Ego Maniacs?
Am I destined to work for people who think they know everything? Is that this business?
My career started in 1994, which was a stealth bear market for stocks and an outright bear market for bonds. Fed Chair Alan Greenspan hiked rates seven times as he played catch up in response to a percolating economy that rediscovered its sea legs coming off the 1991 recession.
6 Health Services Stocks Offering Growth at a Reasonable Price: Part 10
The Health Services Sector is one of the smallest sectors as presented by FactSet as it only contains 137 companies out of more than 19,000 in the US and Canadian universe.
Financial considerations for families with special needs
According to a 2016 Return on Disability Group report, over 56 million people in the United States identified themselves as having a disability. This demographic, along with their caretakers, requires specialized financial planning, but are often left underserved by their advisors.

Fourth Quarter 2018 - The Year When Nothing Worked
2018 will be broadly remembered as a year when nothing worked and daily stock market volatility spiked. This contrasted with 2017 where seemingly everything pushed higher, and volatility was low. But in 2018, nearly every single asset class and all but one major stock market index (Brazil) around the globe posted negative returns.

The Heart of the Matter
Let’s be clear. October’s market decline was a rather mild warning shot. At its lowest close, the S&P 500 lost -9.9% from its September peak, before rebounding in recent sessions. As I noted during the 2000-2002 and 2007-2009 collapses, intermittent “fast, furious, prone-to-failure” rebounds are among the factors that encourage investors to hold on through the entirety of major declines.
Median Household Incomes by Age Bracket: 1967-2017
Earlier this week, we updated our commentary on household income distribution to include the Census Bureau's release of the 2017 annual data. Our focus was on arithmetic mean (average) household incomes by quintile (and the top 5%) over the 50+ year history of this data series. The analysis offered some fascinating insights into U.S. household incomes. But the classification misses the implications of age for income. Households are by no means locked into the same quintile over time.
Are Out-of-State Advance Directives Valid in Your Home State?
Advisors often receive clients’ advance directives, such as durable powers of attorney and health care proxies, that were drafted in a different state, perhaps many years ago. Are those still valid?
Goldilocks and the Three Fears
It is hard to say with certainty what drives trading on any particular day, but it doesn’t seem a stretch to say that over the past few months a combination of tariffs and Federal Reserve rate hike fears have broadly impacted both equity and fixed income markets.
